Fußballvereinsnamen in Österreich

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of Austrian football club names. Following a short history of football in Austria, the structure of multi-part club names is examined as well as the introduction of company names through sponsoring (which is very prevalent in Austria for football club names). The focus of the analysis lies on the so-called agnomen, a type of nickname which leaves the most room for individuality and ensures sufficient distinction. Furthermore, a closer look is taken at the linguistic usage of club names. It is argued that a default feminine gender for agnomina has emerged, and its development is shown.
